Montenay York Resource Energy Systems, LLC is now a part of Veolia Environmental Services Waste-to-Energy Division. We are a waste-to-energy facility located in York, Pennsylvania. The 112-acre county site provides a means of economical waste disposal for more than 400,000 residents of York County. The incinerator was constructed in 1989 for the York County Solid Waste Authority by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation using their O’Connor Rotary Combustor Technology. Westinghouse transferred operational responsibility to the Montenay Power Corporation in November 1998. In July 2006, Montenay (also known as Onyx) changed its name to Veolia Environmental Services. Headquartered in Paris, France, Veolia Environnement was formed more than 150 years ago and has operations in more than 70 countries. Veolia Environnement is a complex mix of different businesses and brands such as Veolia Water, Veolia Environmental Services, Veolia Energy and Veolia Transportation. Veolia Environmental Services North America offers fully integrated environmental solutions to virtually all industrial, commercial, municipal and residential sectors. The Facility is monitored by the stringent Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection regulatory guidelines and the plant incorporates the latest state-of-the-art emissions monitoring equipment. Our Environmental Management System was certified ISO-14001 by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September 2003. York's Environmental Management System adheres to the strict protocol for implementing, reviewing, improving and maintaining facility environmental affairs. The Facility has maintained a full-time Environmental and Safety Manager since conception. Our safety program was awarded the Star Worksite designation by the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) audit in December, 2001 and was proudly recertified in September 2004. Montenay York was the first workplace in York County to become a Star Worksite and has mentored neighboring applicants in their quest to apply to the program. As an OSHA VPPA Star worksite, health and safety is a major part of each employee’s work routine. The facility has processed over 7 million tons of trash and generated over 3.6 million megawatt hours of electricity for an average of 522 kilowatts per ton of trash processed since opening its gates in October 1989. This has kept pace with historical average increase in York County trash that has averaged an annual growth rate of 3.7%.
